Chemicals found in Fast-food Part 1
Sodium
Stearoyl Lactylate better known as SSL is a chemical
also found in shampoo as well as soap, the reason it has been found in fast
food is because its purpose is to serve as a “dough conditioner” allowing the
gluten in bread to become stronger and more flexible, which in turn allows
bread to improve its ability to maintain volume causing less crumbing. According
to The Center for Science in the Public
Interest (Read more: http://www.livestrong.com/article/124148-sodium-stearoyl-lactylate/#ixzz2S2ruJk97
) Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate is a safe product.
Calcium Disodium EDTA a chemical also found in
cleaners, skin products and hair conditioner its purpose in food is to serve as
a stabilizer to prevent catalytic oxidative decoloration, which is easier
understood as a preservative, serving it’s purpose as a chemical ingredient
designed to absorb oxygen to better prolong flavor and over all shelf life of
food. This chemical is also found in soft drinks containing ascorbic acid as
well as sodium benzoate EDTA’s purpose here is to help moderate the formation
of Benzene (a carcinogen known to be used in the manufacturing of products like
rubbers, lubricant, dyes, explosives, pesticides, drugs even detergent and also
found in volcanoes, forest fires and cigarettes)
Ammonium Glycyrrhizin also known as Also known as
glycyrrhizic acid or ammonium glycyrrhizinate, used in the formulation of
beauty products such as personal hygiene and tanning products as well as skin,
hair and nail care products, including makeup and fragrances. This chemical is
derived from the licorice root, being that this chemical is relatively versatile
and used in medicine, beauty products as well as in food and beverages it is
considered to be Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) however, over-consumption
poses a risk of water retention, hypertension, and loss of potassium and
calcium, and according to World Standard Drug Database it can also cause Fluid
retention, Heart failure, Hypertension, Hypokalaemia, Muscle weakness and Renal
function tests abnormal.
